Why did you decide to apply for professional registration?
I currently have a unique role in chemistry education teaching chemistry both in a school and a university and doing chemistry education research. Prior to this I had been a Head of Department and have now decided against taking a traditional career path up a leadership route. I applied for CSciTeach to challenge myself about the credibility of my role as a leader in chemistry education outside of the traditional roles.
What makes the Science Council’s professional registration award different to other registration awards you may be eligible to apply for?
It is an established scheme with challenging assessment criteria. I trust the organisations awarding CSciTeach to hold me to the very highest standards, enhancing my credibility amongst the wider science community.
How has professional registration with the Science Council made an impact on your work or career?
CSciTeach has given me credibility amongst the wider science education community, an endorsement of my professional skills.
Have there been any women mentors or role models in your career and how have they influenced progress you have made?
Far too many to mention here. From the woman who helped me access my teacher training place to the formal and informal mentors I have met along the way, so many women have helped me on my way here. Advice and guidance from female colleagues and peers has helped me be 10% braver and propose my current, unique role.
What do you value most from being a member of your professional body?
The varied and interesting opportunities that being a Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) member has allowed me to access. My involvement with the RSC has allowed me to get involved in science education policy, writing and curriculum development. The member networks have led me to meet a range of interesting people in a variety of roles that have shaped my career both inside the classroom and beyond.
What messages do you have for other women about how professional registration has helped you to be recognised and progress in your field?
Don’t let imposter syndrome prevent you from applying for registration. Hold your head high amongst your peers.
