The British Society of Soil Science was formed in 1947 to advance the study of soil, to be open to membership from all with an interest in the study and uses of soil and to circulate one publication annually. The BSSS is now an established international membership organisation and charity committed to the study of soil in it’s widest aspects.

In 2010 BSSS merged with the Institute of Professional Soil Scientists (IPSS) which continues to deliver the needs of the Society’s professional membership. IPSS was founded in 1991 and prescribes the professional standards accepted by its members and strives continually to advance their competence in scientific and technical matters.
