Gaining recognition at a professional level
I became a member of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) during my undergraduate degree in BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science. One of the perks of being a member of the of the IBMS was receiving the monthly ‘The Biomedical Scientist’ gazette. I hadn’t heard of the Science Council and wasn’t aware of what they were about. The IBMS gazette always had a section about the Science Council and through reading this section and also using the power of the internet I was able to find out more about the Science Council.
In those earlier years, I didn’t actually meet the criteria for professional registration. It wasn’t until I had gained a number of years of post-graduate experience in the laboratory I was currently working in and had also completed my MSc, did I then decide to apply for Chartered Scientist status.
I have always been proud of what I have achieved at a personal level and through applying for professional registration, this personal achievement was also recognised at a professional level.
Professional registration has enabled me to not only progress in my career but to also be proud of my career and what I have achieved to date.
What I value from my professional body
Well, if it wasn’t for the IBMS, I would have never applied for Chartered Scientist status. The IBMS has allowed me to enhance my knowledge and skills, keep up to date with current affairs and network with other fellow scientists in my profession, whether it be through their website, the monthly gazette or even their national events and training courses.
If you are thinking about professional registration…
If you are thinking about becoming professionally registered and meet the criteria, I would actively encourage you to apply. Employers from all areas seek employees with professional registration status, as they know that anyone with professional registration have to meet their professional standards and maintain their standards at all times.
