"David finds that working towards a goal and meeting rigorous standards is an excellent way to develop skills and strengthen weaker areas."
Dr David Boyce is a teacher at Queenswood School, Hertfordshire, and currently holds chartered status in five disciplines. After completing a PhD in astrophysics, he transitioned into teaching and worked towards Chartered Physicist status with the Institute of Physics, which he obtained in 2012.
Following nearly two decades of teaching across all branches of science—during which he authored three textbooks and received multiple awards for his teaching—he discovered that he was eligible to pursue chartered status in other disciplines. With the guidance of mentors and significant support from the awarding bodies, he has since achieved the highest professional qualification in a total of five disciplines, believed to be a world first.
Dr Boyce has been awarded Chartered Scientist and Chartered Mathematician status by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, Chartered Science Teacher status through the Association for Science Education, and Chartered Teacher status through the Chartered College of Teaching. Although each qualification initially seemed out of reach, he finds that working towards a goal and meeting rigorous standards is an excellent way to develop skills and strengthen weaker areas. Now holding these qualifications, he can confidently demonstrate not only the highest level of subject expertise but also a remarkable breadth of application.
