Celebration of Science 2024: The Videos

The Science Council 2024 Celebration of Science took place on 26 November, combining our annual prizegiving celebrations with the biennial Sir Gareth Roberts Lecture.

The focus of the event was celebrating the significant contributions of our Registrants. We made 15 CPD Awards, one Apprentice Ambassador Award and extended special recognition to five of our dedicated volunteers. And throughout the day we heard from Registrants about their professional journeys.

Lucy Thorne RSci has worked for the NHS since 2010 and became a mortuary assistant during the COVID-19 pandemic. She subsequently became an Anatomical Pathology Technologist, or Mortuary Technician.

Lucy took the Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Science (Anatomical Pathology Technology). It can be taken as an apprenticeship and is aligned to Registered Scientist (RSci), which means someone who completes it can apply for professional registration via our shortened application route.

Charlotte Elliott RSci has worked in STEM for around 11 years in a variety of roles. During that time she has progressed from apprentice Laboratory Technician – which is aligned to RSci – to Laboratory Manager.

Finally, we were privileged to hear from Sir Paul Nurse, our 2024 Roberts Lecturer. Sir Paul is a geneticist and cell biologist, Nobel Prize winner and Director of the Francis Crick Institute in London.

Sir Paul was interviewed by Science Council President Professor Catherine Ross. They discussed his professional journey, scientific discoveries and recent independent review of the research, development and innovation organisational landscape for the UK Government.
