Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is a core strand of our strategy. It is fundamental to everything that we do, so we embed inclusive behaviours and practices in all our approaches, activities, and decisions.
Our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Forum is an opportunity to discuss our members’ progress using the Diversity and Inclusion Progression Framework 3.0 and other efforts to make science more accessible. It is chaired by our Diversity Champion and showcases work by all our members. If you are working on EDI at one of our member bodies and would like to attend, please contact Brian Wagenbach, EDI Programme Manager.
The Science Council Declaration on Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
The Science Council Declaration on Equity, Diversity & Inclusion was developed with Members and first launched in 2014. All Members sign up to the Declaration, which has led to the development of strategies, action plans and an increase in resources dedicated to engagement and culture change.
By living the values of equity, diversity and inclusion, and critically assessing and acknowledging the inequalities that exist, the Science Council and its member bodies will create greater opportunity for any individual to fulfil their scientific potential, irrespective of their background or circumstances. In so doing it will also help science to better serve society by attracting the widest possible talent to the science workforce and fostering a greater diversity of scientific ideas, research and technology.”
Diversity and Inclusion Progression Framework 3.0
The Framework is a practical tool that supports professional bodies to self-assess and monitor their progress on diversity and inclusion. It assesses practice in relation to ten functions against a five-level maturity model. The aim is to support discussion, initiation, planning and assessment of diversity and inclusion work.
You can learn more about progress towards that goal in our benchmarking reports.
The Science Council has set itself a strategic ambition to work towards a science workforce that reflects the diversity of society.
All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM
The Science Council is proud to be a sponsor of the APPG on Diversity and Inclusion as part of our commitment to inclusion.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) in STEM aims to promote the inclusion and progression of people from diverse backgrounds in STEM, and to encourage government, parliamentarians, academics, businesses and other stakeholders to work towards a STEM sector that is representative of the population. The British Science Association (BSA) acts as secretariat for the Group. The Group is composed of Members of Parliament and Lords and serves as a focus for collaboration with businesses and other organisations in STEM.
