The Science Council Board is pleased to announce the appointment of new Co-Chairs, Karen Brazier and Russell Wilson, to lead the Science Council’s Registration Authority. This marks the first time that the Registration Authority will be co-led, demonstrating the Science Council’s recognition of the high level of excellence and commitment that the role requires and its dedication to working flexibility with our volunteers.

In appointing Karen and Russell, the Board is confident that their combined in-depth knowledge of the technical and scientific workforce and experience chairing and fostering collaboration will lead the Registration Authority to build on previous success.

Chaired for the past 8 years by  Dr Hilary Jeffreys CSci, the Registration Authority is responsible for setting and maintaining robust and high-quality professional standards and ensuring that registrants on all four of our registers (CSci, RSci, RSciTech, CSciTeach) meet these standards.

Meet the new Co-chairs:

Karen is blonde with blue eyes and is smiling to camera.

Karen Brazier CSci is a Chartered Scientist, HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist and current member of the Science Council Registration Authority. Karen is Healthcare Science Professional Advisor for the Scottish Government, advising on national policy, workforce strategy, and service transformation. Karen was named Scotland’s Healthcare Scientist of the Year 2024.

Russell Wilson CSci is a Chartered Scientist, Vice Chair of the Science Council’s Registration Routes Committee and member of the Technical Pathways Advisory Group. Russell is the Technician Strategic Lead at the University of Cambridge, leading an institution-wide workforce strategy, with a focus on enabling career mobility and championing an inclusive and equitable culture for technical staff.

The new Co-chairs are appointed for an initial 3-year term and will continue to build on the work led by Dr Jeffreys over the last 8 years.

We would like to thank Dr Jeffreys for her enthusiasm, commitment and tireless efforts in her role as Chair of the Science Council’s Registration Authority. Dr Jeffreys will continue to share her valued expertise until May 2026 while the new Co-chairs settle into post.
