As the leading professional body for scientists, students, and support staff in biomedical science, the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) represents over 21,000 members in 74 countries. Established in 1912, the IBMS is dedicated to advancing excellence in biomedical science and maintaining the highest standards of patient care.

The Institute sets and upholds professional standards through education, training, assessments, and continuing professional development (CPD). It also offers research grants to support innovation. Members work across healthcare, academia, government, veterinary, and commercial laboratories.

To practise as a biomedical scientist, professionals must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The IBMS provides pathways to registration and career progression, offering qualifications, publications, and events that keep members informed about the latest developments.

Biomedical science plays a crucial role in healthcare by analysing patient samples, identifying diseases, and guiding treatments. In the UK, laboratories handle over 1.5 billion samples annually, contributing to more than 70% of NHS diagnoses.

Through advocacy, public relations, and outreach campaigns, the IBMS promotes awareness of biomedical science and its vital contribution to modern medicine, while inspiring future professionals to join this essential field.
