As Volunteers’ Week 2026 comes to a close, we would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of our volunteers. Throughout the week, we spotlighted some of their incredible work with the Science Council and celebrated long-time volunteer Dr Hilary Jeffreys as she steps down from her role as Chair of the Registration Authority.
From engaging and helping those who are interested in becoming professionally registered, to informing our policy work, to supporting the governance and future planning for the organisation – the breadth of work supported by our volunteers is vast.
Achieving the Science Council’s vision wouldn’t be possible without you all. Together we can inspire and elevate the science workforce.
Meet some of our volunteers
Hamzah Ahmed
Hamzah sits on the Science Council Board of Trustees as Diversity Champion and supports our EDI work in his role as Chair of our EDI Forum.
He is particularly driven in raising recognition and opening up opportunities for apprentices, having started out his career in aerospace and sustainability as an engineering apprentice.
Rob Butler CSciTeach
Rob supports our ‘Introduction to Professional Registration’ workshops and has done for a number of years. He also volunteers as an Applicant Support Mentor – helping those through the application process.
Rob works as a Registrar with The Association for Science Education and also volunteers for another organisation that he is passionate about, Mencap.
Dr Megan O’Donnell FGS
Megan supports the Science Council’s policy work as a voluntary member of our Policy Forum.
She is passionate about helping to improve the experience of being a working scientist and creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment in which anyone can become a scientist.
