I love meeting people I’ve worked with who have had their applications for professional registration accepted. It gives them a huge confidence boost to have their science skills and aptitudes recognised.

Rob Butler CSciTeach

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do

I used to be a science teacher in a special school (when I was awarded CSciTeach) until I stepped down from the classroom a few years ago. Since I left teaching, I’ve worked in the field of science education – running CPD workshops and working for the Association for Science Education (ASE). My roles at the ASE consist of managing our practical science project and looking after the ASE’s professional registers.

What inspired you to start volunteering?

I work part time at the ASE and have plenty of free time on my hands. I wanted to do something that I enjoy and find fulfilling. I used to volunteer at the ASE before I became an employee, and I currently volunteer at Mencap and at the Science Council which cover two of my passions – improving lives for people with learning disabilities and raising the status of scientists in all aspects of the science economy.

Can you describe a memorable experience or highlight from your time volunteering?

I love meeting people I’ve worked with who have had their applications for professional registration accepted. It gives them a huge confidence boost to have their science skills and aptitudes recognised.

What does volunteering mean to you personally?

I like to think I have made a difference to people in each of the volunteer roles I hold. It’s also a good opportunity to meet new people and build your professional network.

What advice would you give to someone considering volunteering?

I would encourage people to get involved. You don’t have to be an expert to be helpful and make a difference. If you are a member of a professional body, start there and see how you can support their work.
