Why did you decide to apply for an apprenticeship?

I decided to apply for an apprenticeship because it offered the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification while continuing to develop practical skills in a real working environment. As someone passionate about microbiology and quality, I wanted a structured pathway to deepen my scientific knowledge, build confidence, and apply what I learned directly to my role. The apprenticeship provided the ideal balance between academic learning and hands-on experience.

How has your apprenticeship impacted your career path?

My apprenticeship has had a significant impact on my career by broadening both my technical knowledge and leadership capabilities. It has helped me develop a deeper understanding of microbiological principles, quality systems, and continuous improvement while strengthening skills such as communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. The experience has increased my confidence in taking on additional responsibilities and has supported my progression into a leadership role within the laboratory.

What skills or experiences do you value most from working as an apprentice?

The skills I value most are critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to apply scientific knowledge to real workplace challenges. Working as an apprentice has also improved my communication and collaboration skills through working closely with colleagues across different teams. The combination of academic study and practical laboratory experience has helped me understand how scientific principles directly contribute to quality, compliance, and customer confidence.

How has Professional Registration with the Science Council made an impact on your work or career?

Professional Registration has helped me recognise and demonstrate my competence as a science professional. Achieving registration provided external recognition of the skills, knowledge, and experience I have developed throughout my career and apprenticeship. It has increased my confidence, encouraged continued professional development, and strengthened my commitment to maintaining high scientific and ethical standards in my work.

What do you value most from being a member of your professional body?

What I value most is being part of a professional community that promotes high standards across the scientific profession. Membership provides access to professional development opportunities, industry insights, and networking with other scientists. It also helps me stay informed about developments within the field and supports lifelong learning, which is essential in a constantly evolving scientific environment.

What advice would you give to other apprentices considering professional registration?

I would encourage apprentices to consider professional registration as early as possible. It provides recognition for the skills and experience you are already developing and helps you reflect on your professional growth. The process also encourages continuous development and can enhance career opportunities. Even if it seems challenging at first, the benefits of demonstrating your competence and commitment to the profession make it worthwhile.
